What this is

A device, a year, and a neighborhood.

Sam’s iPod 2006 recreates a specific object at a specific moment: an iPod with a click wheel, loaded with 847 songs, in West Campus in 2006. You spin the wheel and see what loads.

It’s a personal artifact turned playable—one library, one year, one person’s taste preserved exactly.

The playable game lives at sams-ipod-2006.netlify.app. This page is its home in the Brand New Colors portfolio.

Behind the game

A music library is already a portrait.

Of all the things Brand New Colors has made playable, this is the smallest world: one device belonging to one person. And it still passes the studio’s test, because a 2006 music library is dense with information—what someone loved, what they skipped, who they were that year.

The interface does the rest. A click wheel is already a game controller; it just spent a few years pretending to be a music player.
